for Exposition
Dongguan,
located in the middle-south of China's Guangdong Province
and at the core of Pearl River Delta as well as in the
center of Guangdong-Shenzhen-Hong Kong economic belt,
is the gateway for water and land transportation between
Guangzhou and Hong Kong and is the important economic
corridor between the two regions. Advanced highway network
in the city connects the national highway, railway,
port and airport together. With an area of 2,465 square
kilometers, the city has a population of 1.52 million
local residents and 5 million wageworkers from outside
the city. Besides, the city is a famous Hometown of
Overseas Chinese, with more than 700,000 compatriots
from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and more than 200,000
overseas Chinese and compatriots.

| Since
the reform and opening up, Dongguan has adopted the strategy
of economic globalization and has made tremendous efforts
in absorbing foreign capital to develop export-oriented
economies. For the last two decades, Dongguan's economy
has witnessed a rapid growth with an average 20% of annual
increase rate. Now the city has grown into a new modernized
industrial city and has established good economic co-operational
relationship with more than 20 countries and regions including
Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, the United
Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Canada,
France, Singapore, etc. Nearly 14,000 foreign invested
enterprises have been set up in the city. In 2001, Dongguan
completed a foreign export volume of US$18.989 billion,
ranking third among China's large and medium cities for
the fifth consecutive year. A group of internationally
renowned transnational corporations such as Norkia, DuPont,
Samsung, Nestle, etc., as well as companies listed in
Hong Kong and Taiwan stock market, have made big investments
in the city. A modernized industrial system with pillar
industries of electronic & electric, textile &
garments, toys & shoes, food, drink, hardware &
mechanics, building materials, medicine, etc. has been
set up. The city has also established the international
manufacturing base with full industrial accessories. |

| Take
leather shoes business for example, Dongguan currently
has near 1,200 leather shoes manufacturers with over 300,000
employees. 158 of the manufacturers have an annual sales
income of above 5 million. Of the yearly production of
1 billion pairs of shoes, 536 million pairs are exported
with an export value of US$843 million. The yearly demand
for shoe materials and shoe-making equipment exceeds a
total value of 5 billion RMB yuan. More than 10% of the
global shoes products are imported from Dongguan, with
a coverage of over 100 countries and regions. |
| Baocheng
International Group, the biggest transnational shoes group
in the world, established Yu Yuan Shoes Factory in Dongguan,
and set up Yu Yuan Industrial Park in 1988, moving 10
of its subsidiary modernized factories of large scale
including Bao Tai Shoes Factory, Bao Liang Shoes Materials
Factory, etc. into the Industrial Park Zone. Though youngest
among the three major shoes manufacturing bases in China,
Dongguan is the most internationalized one. |

| With
the implementation of a series of reform measures including
increasing the family income, expanding the domestic demand,
starting up the consumption market, etc., the consumption
has been greatly increased. The consumption structure
of the city is much oriented to modernization. Statistics
show that in 2001 the average actual expenditure per capita
of the urban residential families is 17,314 RMB yuan,
an increase of 21.99% over 2000. Of the expenditure, 14,669
RMB yuan is for consumption, up 17.08% year on year. Expenditure
on traffic tools of 10 thousand yuan or 100 thousand yuan
has an evident increase, while real estate, home computer,
big pieces of top grade for daily use, touring, etc.,
still remain highlight for consumption in urban residential
families. |

| The
economic growth has laid a solid foundation for the development
of exposition business in Dongguan, which itself is a
market for international commodities ranging from raw
materials to auxiliary to finished products, all suitable
for exposition. The city is also a huge consumption market
(including consumption for life materials and production
materials). For Dongguan, consumption, together with investment
and exports, has become one of the three major forces
to pull Dongguan's economy ahead. Many foreign expo companies
and IT manufacturer rush to the city for holding expositions
especially in the sight of the great potential of the
city's market and expo business. |
| The
city has so far hosted 6 expositions of electronic information
products, garments, furniture, farm products, shoes materials
and woolen fabrics, casting a great influence both in
and abroad, with a total trade value of 20 billion yuan.
Especially, the International Computer, Communication
& Consumer Electronic Products Exposition (3C EXPO')
solely depended on thousands of IT enterprises in the
city, showing the competitiveness of the city's IT industry.
The third Electronic Exposition held in 2001 attracted
100,000 visitors and total 253 projects of investment
and trade were signed at the exposition with a total contracted
value of over 14 billion yuan. |

| The
exposition has become the pearl on the crown of the year's
expo economy in terms of scale, level, connotation, significance,
etc. In terms of scale, the exposition has become the
fourth largest electronic exposition, following COMPEX
FALL (Las Vegas, the U.S.), CEBIT (Hannover, Germany),
COMPUTEX (Taipei, Taiwan). The China (Humen) International
Garments Fair attracted 600,000 businessmen and visitors
achieving a trading volume of 2.02 billion yuan. The trade
in Great Beijing-Kowloon (Changping) Agricultural &
Side Products and Foods Fair reached a volume of 687 million
yuan. Hou Jie International Furniture Exposition concluded
with a total trade value of 1.63 billion yuan. Guangdong
(Da Lang) Woolen Fabrics Exposition witnessed a trade
of 200 million yuan. |
| Each
of the above expositions attracted an audience of more
than 100,000 clients and visitors. National Shoe Materials
& Shoes Products &Industrial Equipment Fair held
in Dongguan attracted manufacturers and buyers both in
and abroad. Businessmen from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan,
and famous manufacturers from Italy, U.K., Japan, France,
South Korea, etc., came to attend the exposition. |
| In
order to reinforce the hardware environment construction
of the expo economy, the government of Dongguan City has
built Dongguan International Conference & Exhibition
Center in the New City Center Area of Dongguan with an
investment of 450 million yuan. The Center is administrated
and utilized by China Council for the Promotion of International
Trade Dongguan Branch. With a main hall area of near 50,000
square meters, surrounded by road networks, the Center
is by far the exposition hall with the most complete facilities
and functions in Pearl River Delta, integrating various
functions of expo, conference, hotel, etc. Dongguan International
Conference & Exhibition Center, together with the
Dongguan Boulevard, not only composes a shiny scenery
of Dongguan's New City Centre Area, but also provides
all expo professionals with a brand new stage for exhibition. |
