Around 50 Global Footwear Firms to Relocate Production in Indonesia
After experiencing the depression caused by the Asian financial crisis, Indonesian footwear industry is showing signs of recovery.
According to the Indonesian Footwear Industry Association (Aprisindo), around 50 global footwear firms are planning to relocate their production to Indonesia due to anti-dumping measures imposed on China and Vietnam by US and EU.
The Indonesian Footwear Industry Association (Aprisindo) estimates that this will contribute to exports of Indonesia's footwear in the future.
Aprisindo estimates that the exports of Indonesia's footwear will increase by 20% in year 2006, as compared to 150 million pairs of shoes (worth US1.5 billion) in year 2005.
As PT Dong Joe Indonesia, PT Spotec, and PT Tong Yang Indonesia are going to shutdown and affect around 18,000 workers employed at the factories, there are still problems threatening the industry.
