As learned from Press Conference of "Leather Shoe and Articles Exhibition Zone" for Sino-French SME Expo, Guangdong is the most active and most potential region in the world's shoe-making industry. Currently, Guangdong turns out about 4 billion pairs of shoes per year, accounting for about 50% in the country and about 1/3 in the world. On the other hand, Guangdong exports up to 2.5 billion pairs of shoes per year, almost accounting for 50% of the total export in the country.

Leather article production enterprises in China are mainly distributed in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu, and the output of leather articles in Guangdong accounts for higher than 60% in the country.

In shoe export volume, Guangdong ranks first among all shoe export countries in the world. In 1990, total shoe export value in Guangdong hit USD 480 million. Since then, Guangdong has witnessed a constant growth. In 2004, Guangdong shoe export created a new high, hitting 2.56 billion pairs in export volume and USD 6.2 billion in export value, increasing by 11.8% and 12.2% over previous year. Shoe product has become one of the 10 major export commodities and is becoming a significant foreign exchange earner for Guangdong Province.
